The story is about a African American girl and about her summer. Her mother told her not to cross the fence. However, there is a white girl about her age who stands at the fence looking into the girls yard most days. The girls see each other in town and near the fence but they never speak because of what their mothers tell them. Finally, one day the two introduce themselves and then things change for them both.
This story is good to show students how different races did not have a lot of connect with one another at one point. However, it also shows that it is alright for the two races to be friends with one another.
