This story tells of the different adventures that Jack goes on during a short period of his life. He is a smart boy, and decided that the orphan school is not for him. He runs away from the school. He now has to fend for himself. He uses his wit to get help, rides, money and food. He finds himself in a town that excepts him for his smart and wits. He is then faced with a choice to stay and be an apprentice with a miller or continue his travel.
This book is a great adventure for students. Jack has a large vocabulary. It can help show how important knowing vocabulary is in life. The story forces children to use context clues to understand the new word in the story.
